Most law firm websites launch with critical issues that go unfixed. Forms that don't actually send. Phone numbers that aren't click-to-call. Meta descriptions that are missing. Mobile experiences that are broken. ADA compliance that was skipped. Each of these issues silently costs the firm clients from day one.
Pre-launch QA isn't glamorous. It's tedious. But it's the difference between a website that performs from launch day and one that limps along losing clients while the firm wonders why their phone isn't ringing.
This is the comprehensive checklist we use before launching any law firm website. 25 items, organized by category. Skip none of them.
Content checklist
The content on your website is what visitors actually read. Errors here destroy credibility before any technical issue gets noticed.
1. Every page has been proofread by a professional
Typos, grammatical errors, and awkward phrasing on a law firm website are uniquely damaging. Visitors expect attorneys to be precise with language. A typo on a personal injury site is just sloppy. A typo on a contract attorney's site is a credibility killer.
Have someone other than the writer proofread every page. Ideally, hire a professional editor for a final pass. Read every page out loud — errors that pass silent reading reveal themselves when spoken.
2. Attorney bios are complete and current
Every attorney in your firm needs a complete bio page. Verify:
- Current photo (not from 5 years ago)
- Updated practice areas
- Recent case results
- Current bar admissions
- Updated education and credentials
- Personal touch (philosophy, hobbies, community involvement)
- Direct contact info or scheduling link
Outdated bios signal a firm that doesn't pay attention to details. Update bios at least annually.
3. Practice area pages are substantial and specific
Each practice area needs its own dedicated page with at least 800 words. For the full inventory of pages a firm should have, see what pages does a law firm website need. Verify each practice area page covers:
- What types of cases you handle
- Common scenarios in this practice area
- Your specific approach
- Notable results
- Practice-area specific FAQs
- Clear CTAs
If a practice area has only a paragraph on a generic "Practice Areas" page, that's a problem. Build out dedicated pages or remove the practice area mention entirely.
4. All required legal pages exist
These pages are non-negotiable:
- Privacy Policy
- Terms of Use
- Accessibility Statement
- ADA Compliance statement
- Required state bar advertising disclaimers (varies by state — verify your state's requirements)
- Disclaimer that contacting the firm doesn't establish an attorney-client relationship
Missing legal pages can result in regulatory issues, ADA lawsuits, or state bar complaints. Don't launch without them.
5. Contact information is consistent everywhere
Your firm name, address, and phone number must be identical on every page of your website AND match exactly what's on your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Avvo, and every other directory.
Verify:
- Footer NAP on every page
- Contact page NAP
- Schema markup with consistent NAP
- Same format everywhere ("Suite 200" vs "Ste. 200" — pick one)
Inconsistent NAP confuses search engines and hurts local rankings. This is one of the foundations of Local SEO.
Technical checklist
The technical foundation determines whether visitors can use your site at all. The platform you chose largely dictates how easy these items are to verify and fix.
6. Page speed is under 3 seconds on mobile
Test your site at Google PageSpeed Insights. Verify:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds
- First Input Delay (FID) under 100 milliseconds
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1
- All images compressed and optimized (WebP format ideal)
- No unnecessary scripts or plugins
- Caching properly configured
Slow sites lose 40% of visitors before they finish loading. Page speed is a major Google ranking factor.
7. SSL certificate is active
Your site URL must be https:// not http://. Verify:
- SSL certificate is installed and valid
- All pages redirect from http to https
- No mixed content warnings (some resources loading over http)
- The padlock icon appears in browsers
Sites without SSL are penalized by Google and rejected by browsers as "Not Secure."
8. Site is fully mobile responsive
Over 60% of legal searches happen on phones. Test on actual devices, not just desktop browser tools.
Check:
- iPhone (current model)
- iPhone (older model with smaller screen)
- Android (current model)
- iPad/tablet
- Various screen sizes
Verify on each:
- All text is readable without zooming
- Buttons are tappable (minimum 44x44 pixels)
- Forms work properly
- Phone numbers are click-to-call
- Navigation menus open and close properly
- Images scale appropriately
- No horizontal scrolling needed
9. All forms work end-to-end
Test every form on the website by submitting it. Verify:
- Form submits successfully
- Confirmation message displays after submission
- The submission actually arrives at the intended email or CRM
- Auto-responder emails send to the visitor
- Spam protection is working (CAPTCHA or invisible)
- Required fields are marked clearly
- Validation works (invalid emails are rejected, etc.)
Forms that don't work are silent killers. They cost clients without leaving any visible evidence.
10. Phone numbers are click-to-call on mobile
Every phone number on the site should be tappable on mobile devices to start a call. Verify:
- Phone number in header
- Phone numbers in body content
- Phone numbers in footer
- Phone numbers in attorney bios
Test by clicking each one on a phone. If it doesn't initiate a call, fix the markup.
11. All internal and external links work
A site full of broken links is a site that screams "we don't pay attention." Use a link checker tool (Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, or free tools like Dr. Link Check) to verify:
- No 404 errors on internal links
- External links open in new tabs (target="_blank")
- External links to authoritative sources are still valid
- No broken images
- No links to staging or development URLs
12. Site loads correctly on all major browsers
Test on:
- Chrome (most users)
- Safari (iPhone users)
- Firefox
- Edge
Verify the site looks and functions correctly on each. Browser-specific bugs are common, especially with older Safari versions.

SEO checklist
Without proper SEO setup, your site won't rank. Without ranking, no one finds you.
13. Every page has unique meta titles and descriptions
Verify:
- Every page has a unique meta title (50-60 characters)
- Every page has a unique meta description (150-160 characters)
- Both include the target keyword for that page
- Both are compelling enough to drive clicks from search results
- No duplicate or auto-generated content
14. Schema markup is properly implemented
Schema markup helps search engines understand your content and enables rich snippets. Verify:
- Attorney or LegalService schema on the homepage
- Article schema on every blog post
- FAQPage schema on FAQ pages
- LocalBusiness schema with NAP
- Person schema on attorney bio pages
- BreadcrumbList schema on all pages
Test schema with Google's Rich Results Test tool to verify it's valid.
15. XML sitemap exists and is submitted to Google
Your sitemap tells Google which pages to crawl. Verify:
- Sitemap is at /sitemap.xml
- Sitemap includes all important pages
- Sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console
- Robots.txt references the sitemap location
16. Robots.txt is properly configured
The robots.txt file controls what search engines crawl. Verify:
- File exists at /robots.txt
- It doesn't accidentally block important pages
- It blocks admin areas and staging if applicable
- It points to your sitemap
Common mistake: leaving the staging robots.txt that disallows everything when launching.
17. Canonical tags are set correctly
Canonical tags prevent duplicate content issues. Verify:
- Every page has a canonical tag pointing to itself
- Canonical URLs use the correct protocol (https) and format
- No conflicting canonical tags
- Pagination handled correctly
18. Open Graph tags configured for social sharing
When someone shares your URL on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter, the right preview should appear. Verify each page has:
- og:title
- og:description
- og:image (1200x630 pixels recommended)
- og:type
- og:url
Test by sharing URLs in social platforms or use Facebook's Sharing Debugger.
Conversion checklist
Even a perfectly optimized site fails if it doesn't drive conversion.
19. Strong CTAs on every page
Every page should have at least one clear call-to-action. Verify:
- Primary CTA visible above the fold on the homepage
- CTAs use action-oriented language ("Get Your Free Case Review" not "Contact Us")
- CTAs stand out visually (contrasting color, large enough to tap)
- Different pages have CTAs appropriate to their content
- Sticky header or floating CTAs on long pages
20. Real photos throughout the site
Stock photos kill credibility. Verify:
- All hero images are real photos of real people or places
- Attorney headshots are real, not generic stock
- Office photos show your actual office
- Team photos show your actual team
If you don't have professional photos yet, schedule a photoshoot before launch. It's a non-negotiable investment — and one of the biggest reasons law firm websites are more expensive than templated builds. For inspiration, see these law firm website examples that nail their photography.
21. Social proof is visible and prominent
Trust signals should appear throughout the site, not buried on a dedicated page. Verify:
- Reviews or testimonials on the homepage
- Star ratings displayed where applicable
- Awards and recognition visible
- Case results prominently displayed
- "As featured in" media logos if applicable
22. Clear navigation that guides visitors
Visitors shouldn't have to hunt for what they need. Verify:
- Main navigation has 5-7 items max
- Practice areas easily accessible
- Contact info or button always visible
- Search functionality works (if you have it)
- Footer navigation organized clearly
Compliance and accessibility checklist
These items protect you legally and ethically.
23. ADA compliance verified
ADA lawsuits against non-compliant law firm websites are increasingly common. Verify:
- All images have alt text
- Color contrast meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards
- Navigation works with keyboard only
- Screen readers can interpret all content
- Forms have proper labels
- Videos have captions (if applicable)
Run an accessibility audit with tools like WAVE or Axe before launch.
24. State bar advertising compliance
Each state has specific rules about attorney advertising. Verify your site complies with:
- Required disclaimers in your state
- Limitations on using terms like "specialist," "expert," or "best"
- Required disclosures about case results
- Rules about testimonials (some states have specific requirements)
When in doubt, have your state bar review your site or consult with an attorney advertising compliance expert.
25. Analytics and tracking installed
You can't improve what you don't measure. Verify before launch:
- Google Analytics 4 installed and tracking
- Google Search Console verified
- Conversion tracking configured (form submissions, phone calls)
- Call tracking installed (if applicable)
- Heatmap or session recording tool considered (Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity)
If you launch without tracking, you'll have no data on what's working and what's broken.
The post-launch first 30 days
The checklist doesn't end at launch. Here's what to monitor in the first 30 days:
Week 1:
- Submit sitemap to Google Search Console
- Verify Google is indexing your pages
- Monitor for any 404 errors or crawl issues
- Test all forms again from various devices
Week 2:
- Review Google Analytics for unexpected behavior
- Check page speed scores again under real traffic
- Verify all conversion tracking is firing correctly
- Address any user-reported issues quickly
Week 3:
- Begin building Google reviews
- Start publishing blog content if not already done
- Optimize Google Business Profile
- Build initial citations and directory listings — your Google Business Profile setup is a critical part of your post-launch checklist
Week 4:
- Review first month's analytics
- Identify any underperforming pages
- Plan content strategy for next 30 days
- Address any feedback from visitors or clients
The bottom line
Pre-launch QA is the difference between a website that performs from day one and one that quietly leaks clients while you wonder why nothing's happening. Each item on this checklist takes minutes to verify. Skipping any of them creates real, measurable damage.
A website is a business asset. Treat the launch like a real launch — with rigorous QA, multiple reviews, and verification of every system. The hour you spend on this checklist saves you from months of confused troubleshooting after launch — and from the kind of compounding law firm website cost that comes from rebuilding things you should have caught the first time.
If you're getting ready to launch a new website or you suspect your current site is missing items from this checklist, an audit is the fastest way to identify what's costing you clients.
